This will be a critical look at this common data center efficiency metric. We will discuss the history of this metric and the initial intent of it as described by its creators at the Green Grid. The appropriateness of depending solely on this metric for design considerations will be discussed at length and the PUE’s perceived strengths and weaknesses as a critical piece of decision-making information will be investigated. Alternative design information that may be used in conjunction with PUE, or in place of it, to make smart data center design decisions will also be touched on.
