The modern data center utilizes many non linier electrical loads due to the use of EC motors and VFD’s on the fans and pumps that maintain environmental conditions within the white space. These variable speed pumps and fans allow us to tightly control the data processing environment while providing a more energy efficient system.
One of the potential downsides of these variable speed systems is the harmonic distortion of the power signal. This distortion is caused by the sinusoidal power signal passing through a non-ideal, non-linear device such as a VFD or ECM; additional content is added to the input signal at multiples (harmonics) of the original frequency. Total Harmonic distortion (THD) is the measure of that additional signal content that was not present in the input signal.
This unwanted distortion can increase the current draw in power systems which results in higher temperatures in conductors and transformers. Higher frequency harmonics can result in additional core loss in motors which results in excessive heating of the motor core which can lead to motor failure.
Join us as we talk with Tony Hoevenaars, President and CEO of Mirus International about understanding the requirements and intent of standard IEEE 519-2014 and the best practices for mitigating Harmonic distortion in a data center’s electrical distribution system. Tony will also discuss writing specifications for insuring acceptable levels of harmonic distortion.
This webinar will be useful to electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and end users.
